Zalando wants to recycle packaging and plans further measures.

At Zalando, 13% of CO2 emissions originate from its packaging. In 2018, Zalando used more than 34,000 tonnes of packaging material.

Now a pilot project with reusable packaging is supposed to reduce the carbon footprint. The pilot project is expected to start in several countries in the second half of 2019. Zalando customers can then return the shipping carton or shipping bag to Zalando for reuse.

In future, beauty products will no longer be shipped in plastic but in paper packaging.

As early as 2020, Zalando wants to use sustainable materials for 100% of self-procured packaging. For packaging that is not self-procured, the company wants to work with its partners and suppliers to reach 100%.

Zalando summarizes its “sustainable packaging principles” as follows:

  • Reduction in the amount of packaging used per shipment
  • Lifecycle analyzes should clarify the environmental impact of each packaging, allowing for the right decisions.
  • If possible, recycled materials should be used.
  • Fresh fibers should come from responsibly managed forests.
  • No use of ingredients that are harmless to the environment and humans during their life cycle.
  • Material use, material costs and recyclability should be optimized by packaging design.
