B+P Consultants study: 79% of plastic packaging producers regard the Circular Economy as a growth opportunity

A new B+P Consultants study of the packaging industry shows: 79% of plastic packaging producers regard the circular economy as a growth opportunity. The circular economy is a game changer. However, it is not yet clear in which direction the “change” will individually go. Will it be a push? Or will it be a blow?

79 % of plastic packaging producers see the Circular Economy as a growth opportunity. These are the initial results of a survey of 270 executives in the packaging industry conducted by B+P Consultants in October 2020.

The study also shows that two out of three plastic packaging producers feel that they are well positioned when it comes to the issue of the circular economy. On the one hand this is pleasing. On the other hand, it is frightening, because the feeling meets a reality that is full of unsolved problems.

The biggest hurdle is undoubtedly closing the loop for plastics. There have been a whole series of initiatives in this area for some time, but the results are still inadequate. The leakage of plastics is still far too great, the variety of plastics used is counterproductive, the use of recycled material is severely limited, and especially in less developed countries of the world there is a fundamental lack of the necessary infrastructure for the collection, separation and sorting of used plastic packaging.

The fact remains: The circular economy is a game changer, especially for the plastics industry. This is where its future is decided. But in which direction the “change” will go individually has not yet been decided. Will it be a push? Or will it be a blow? Both paths are conceivable. But it is also clear that there will be no middle way.
