Digital recycling revolution through a trading platform for used plastics

Thomas Reiner | 08.07.2019

At the beginning of April 2019, the Hamburg-based start-up Cirplus launched a digital trading platform for used plastics. Cirplus’ promise: to make trade in recycled plastics as efficient and easy as possible.

The exchange will cover a full range of old plastics, from bales to recycled materials.

The platform’s promise: Buyers save time and money by being able to directly compare offers, while sellers can open up new markets at home and abroad, while the prices, quantities and qualities of their materials can be tailored exactly towards market demand.

At the heart of the promise are algorithms designed to automate and accelerate the matching process for buyers and sellers.

In the future, Cirplus wants to digitally map the entire transaction: from search and matching to logistics and payment processing as well as intelligent price and quantity analysis, all the way to the integration of blockchain applications.

Even before the platform was launched, 43 companies had registered for the waiting list, according to the company.

With its platform, Cirplus boldly tackles one of the greatest issues of our time. However, the start-up also ventures into a tricky topic, as qualified recyclates are currently mostly still in development and they are only available in the market up to certain extent.
