Bioplastics:
Sealed Air and Kuraray invest in new production capacity
Thomas Reiner | 12.08.2019
Sustainable packaging solutions are more in demand than ever. But does that also mean a new opportunity for bioplastics? In recent years, it had become quiet about bioplastics, especially since the low oil prices did not allow for fair competition. Suddenly there are first investments again – and that especially in the USA.
- Sealed Air Corporation speaks of increased demand for sustainable food packaging. To meet these demands, the company is investing in expanding production capacity at its Simpsonville facility.
- Simpsonville will produce sustainable materials based on “Plantic ™ plant-based resin” and post-consumer plastic. The start of extended production is scheduled for the second quarter of 2020. Sealed Air is investing $24 million.
- Partner Kuraray contributes another $15 million, which the company uses to install a plant-based high barrier resin, among other things. Here production will start in spring 2020.
Sealed Air and Kuraray had reached an agreement in June 2018 to offer Plantic ™ material for perishable foods such as poultry, beef and seafood in the US, Canada and Mexico.
